Seminar dedicated to the Centennial of Genocide held at the Swedish Riksdag

21 April, 2015

A seminar dedicated to the Centennial of Genocide was held at the Swedish Riksdag on April 21 under the title "The Forgotten Genocide of 1915-1918". The seminar was attended by parliamentarians, Ambassadors accredited to Stockholm, public and religious figures, journalists and members of Armenian and Syriac/Assyrian communities.

In his welcoming speech, Ambassador of Armenia to Sweden Mr. Artak Apitonian, referred to the importance of international recognition of Genocide in terms of not repeating the lessons of history, preventing the future genocides as well as struggling against the mindset of solving political issues through violence. “Fighting this mindset will allow to achieve real reconciliation in our region, for which it is important to banish the denialist attitude”, said Ambassador in his speech.

The member of Swedish Riksdag from the Christian Democratic Party Mr. Robert Halef, and Deputy Chairman of Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, Greek parliamentarian Mr. Ioannis Amanatidis also addressed the audience with welcoming speeches.

The speakers of the seminar, Professor of International Law Ove Bring and historian David Gaunt, talked about the history of Genocide, its motivations, political and legal consequences. Journalist Marie Stark presented the changes in Turkish society towards the recognition of the issue. At the end of the seminar the participants had opportunity to ask questions to the speakers.

The cultural part of the event was covered by the Swedish Armenian cellist George Hayrabedian.
