THE ARMENIAN APOSTOLIC CHURCH

The Armenian Community of Sweden together with the Armenian communities of Austria, Czech Republic, Finland and Denmark comprise the Central European Patriarchal Delegation. The Central European Patriarchal Delegation was formed in 1980 by the Kondak (decree) of Catholicos Vazgen I. Initially, the Armenian community in Germany was involved in the Delegation, but from 1991 it was proclaimed as an independent Diocese. The Headquarters of the Central European Patriarchal Delegation is in Vienna at the St. Hripsime Church which is led by Reverend Father Tiran Archimandrite Petrosian.

Historical overview
The religious life in the Armenian community of Sweden started to develop together with the establishment of Armenian Cultural Associations. Armenian priests visited different communities for various religious ceremonies from time to time. In 1997, Father Ghevond Archbishop Chepejan visited Stockholm. In 1978, with the big efforts of Western European Pontifical Delegate Archbishop Serobve Manukian and the local Armenians, the Armenian Church Community was founded in Sweden. In September 2014, an Armenian church was founded in Södertälje.

Pastors
Spiritual services at the Armenian communities of Sweden were conducted by Archbishop Arsen Berberyan, Archimanidre Anushavan Zghjanyan, Reverend Father Nerses Khalatyan, Father Daniel Tumanyan, Senior Priest, Father Baresgh Khacheryan, Father Mkrtich Grigoryan, Father Norayr Gianjumyan. Since November 13 in 2013, by the order of the Catholicos of all Armenians, Reverend Father Eghishe Archimandrite Avedisian was appointed as religious leader of the Armenian orthodox communities of Scandinavia. Father Eghishe conducts spiritual service in Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden.

ARMENIAN COMMUNITY CHURCH COUNCILS

The Armenian Church Council of Stockholm
The Armenian Church council of Stockholm was founded on the basis of Armenian Cultural Association of Stockholm in 1978-79. The Chairman of the Church Council of Stockholm is Mr. Hratch Marutian. In this community the holy liturgies are served twice per month at the Akalla Kyrka, Sibeliusgången 7, 164 73 Kista, as well as 2-3 times per year at the Kista Kyrka, Vejlegatan 4, 164 44 Kista.

Armenian Church Council of Södertälje
The Armenian religious community was established in Södertälje in 1990. The spiritual ceremonies of the community are conducted by Father Norayr Gyanjumyan. The Chairman of the Church Council is Mr. Hovik Simonyan.

The Church Council in Uppsala was founded in 1981. Mr. Harutyun Ekizean is the chairman of the community.

THE ARMENIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH OF SWEDEN

The Armenian Catholic Church was established in Sweden in 1998 by Archimadrite Grigor Shahinyan. With his efforts, councils of Armenian Catholic Community were founded in Stockholm, Södertälje and Trollhättan. Under his pastoral mission, the Council highly contributed to the Armenian community’s social life.

After serving at the Church Council for many years, in 2011 the Reverend Father Grigor Archimandrite Shahinyan was appointed the Pastor of US Armenian Catholic Diocese. Reverend Father Hovsep-Khajik Bahi was appointed to the Pastoral seat of the Armenian catholic community of Sweden.

From the very beginning, the mission of Armenian Catholic Church in Sweden was the preservation of Armenian culture inside the community. Annually, the Church organises various cultural events.
